The Fender American Performer Limited-Edition Mustang electric bass guitar struts an alluring satin honey-burst finish enhanced by the natural tint of its maple neck. Short-scale basses such as the Mustang used to be considered beginner models, as their 30" scale feels looser and easier to play than a conventional 34" scale bass. But these bantam basses have been prized by legends and renowned professionals such as Paul McCartney and Justin Meldal-Johnsen, because the shorter scale also produces deep, fat, and warm tones. As a result, the Mustang Bass can unleash rich ’60s and ’70s sounds, as well as the taut, booming lows of modern pop and dance music.

This limited-edition Mustang displays a ’70s-era silver logo on the headstock for some vintage vibe, but most other features are designed for creating the music of today. Yosemite pickups—a Jazz Bass single-coil in the bridge and a coiling-splitting Mustang single-coil in the middle position—produce powerful and versatile tones with an expressive dynamic range. A Greasebucket circuit in the lone tone control rolls off high end without increasing lows—which is great when you want to dial in a round thud without risking muddiness or boominess.
